When Chinese restaurant The Chinese National opened at Swissôtel Jakarta PIK Avenue a couple years ago, its unique bar named Letterpress Bar was quietly launched as well, though most of the loyal patrons were directed at the scrumptious food stations. But now, with a famous Head Mixologist Amif ‘Miftha’ at the helm, the exquisite and elegant cocktail lounge is officially reintroduced, convulsing the bar scene in northern Jakarta with a series of Asian-influenced concoctions.
Letterpress Bar serves as a speakeasy bar that’s inspired by the vestiges of the Prohibition era that is intentionally hidden from plain sight, has no outside signage, and is discreetly located in the obscured entrance. Enter this best speakeasy bar in the north by guessing the secret password to go to letterpress hallway gallery and find the discreetly hidden Letterpress Bar to bring a pleasant night-time journey.

As the name implies, letterpress is a technique of relief printing is one of the most popular inventions by China that is still used today. Using a printing press, the process allows many copies to be produced by repeated direct impressions of an inked, raised surface against sheets or a continuous roll of paper. Pressed and printed tea bricks; pressed coffee; muddled drinks which are simply pressed to tease out their juices, oils, and extracts. Letterpress is a lounge and bar whose inspiration is clear. With details of printing presses and the printed word, Letterpress marks its path and makes a statement.
Letterpress Bar adapts the art of tea-making and the complexity of Woodblock Printing. The use of intricate patterns creates an opulent atmosphere to this venue with Shanghai-inspired decor that draws in those looking for a balance of sophistication and simplicity.
Amif ‘Miftha’, Letterpress Bar Head Mixologist shared “The best of the best, not only the place, the drinks we make here have their own and unique stories, you won’t find them anywhere else. Letterpress is not just a name, but a technique that requires craftsmanship in every process, and that’s how we create our drinks.”
We’re really fortunate that we had a chance to try and sip a few tipples of their concoctions. We tried some of the Chinese-inspired cocktails in collaboration with Campari and Wild Turkey the other night that left us fascinated. As a quick introduction, refresh your palate with the Marry Pickford, a mix of Bacardi infused Button De Rose, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and grenadine syrup which has a fruit, tropical-like aroma.
Inspired by the Chinese poetry and pottery, Goong Lu brings on the sweetness with a bit of an edge, from its mix of Macerated Cinzano fruit tea, Wild Turkey 81 Whiskey, and Campari Bitter. It’s fruity, it’s quite strong with a garnish of pineapple slices to add more freshness.
It would be wrong not to mention Ginger & Cloves Penicilin. This cocktail is concocted with Wild Turkey 101, clear lemon, ginger juice, HM clove syrup, egg white, and Islay Whiskey. Every sip is foamy but not overwhelmingly so, with a pleasant sweetness and bitterness at the same time.
For a bit of classic cocktails with a modern take, we recommend Hazelnut Boulevardier which contains Wild Turkey 101, 1757 Cinzano Rosso washed roast almond, Frangelico, and Campari, resulting in strong and bittersweet notes served in a classic rock glass.
While you sip, nibble on their Beef Sliders that made with crispy bacon, wagyu beef patty, and their secret Szechuan-inspired sauce that will be your perfect munching companion as the night goes.
