Europe on Screen 2022
June 16, 2022 – June 30, 2022 WIB
After a virtual format over the past two years, the 22nd edition of the European Union (EU) film festival “Europe on Screen” (EoS) will be hosted in a hybrid format for 2022. The offline screenings will be held from 16 to 26 June 2022 in several major cities in Indonesia: Jakarta, Bandung, Denpasar, Medan, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. Meanwhile, audiences can also watch a selection of films via online screenings on festivalscope.com from 20 to 30 June 2022. All EoS 2022 film screenings and side events are free of charge.
The festival will open with Do Not Hesitate (2021), a film from the Netherlands, on 16 June 2022; and it will conclude with The Big Hit (2020), a film from France, on 26 June 2022. The Festival Co-director Nauval Yazid said, “Do Not Hesitate was chosen as the opening film, not only because this film was the Dutch submission for the 94th Oscar in the International Feature Film category, but the film’s story about humanity among soldiers in areas of conflict is a timely reflection of the current state of the world we are in.” The Festival Co-director Meninaputri Wismurti added, “Europe on Screen always tries to screen films that will appeal and have resonance to our audiences in Indonesia. The closing film The Big Hit is a comedy with a big heart, and it surely will inspire everyone to keep on dreaming and trying.”
EoS has also provided support to the Indonesian film industry through its annual Short Film Pitching Project (SFPP). This annual competition calls for entries from emerging Indonesian filmmakers who have brilliant ideas for short films, with the winners awarded partial funding to produce their pitch into a film and have their films premiered in EoS the following year. The competition, which started in 2018, has produced some astounding films that have been screened at various short film festivals around the world.
“The Indonesian film industry is growing, where Indonesian films gathered recognition from international festivals. Events like SFPP EoS 2022 are vital in supporting the Indonesian film industry, as it gives birth to the next generation of filmmakers, especially for short film productions,” said Gita Fara, a Producer and one of the SFPP EoS 2022 judges.
The world premiere of three short films that won EoS SFPP 2021 will be held at GoetheHaus on 19 June 2022 at 13:00. The three short films are:
- Bibir Merah Siapa yang Punya – Pawadi & Haris Supiandi (Pontianak)
- Men and Their Birds – Andrew Kose & Evi Cecilia (Jakarta)
- What Ceti Does (Sejarah Ceti) – Azalia Muchransyah & Adhi Anugroho (Bogor) These films will also be shown online on 20-30 June 2022 at festivalscope.com.
In addition, EoS 2022 will place a special focus on the legendary Italian film director Federico Fellini. This retrospective programme, called #Fellini102, will feature screenings of his classic films, a new documentary about the making of his classic films and an exhibition displaying his visual works. The retrospective programme will open at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura (IIC) on 17 June 2022.
EoS – the longest running international film festival in Indonesia – is organised by the EU diplomatic and cultural representations in Indonesia. Every year the festival attracts more than 30,000 audiences, making EoS one of the largest European film festivals in the world.
Prior to EoS 2022, a pre-festival programme called “Road to EoS 2022” was held to showcase seven films which had been screened at past EoS. The events took place from 3 to 5 June 2022 at Erasmus Huis, GoetheHaus, Istituto Italiano di Cultura and Institut Francais d’Indonesie. The Road to EoS 2022 also included a series of film-related workshops and Instagram Live sessions with Indonesian and European professionals from the film industry.
