Bandung Independent School Hosts an Inspiring Screening of “Eksil”

On Friday, December 13th, 2024, Bandung Independent School (BIS) hosted an engaging film screening of Eksil, a powerful documentary directed by Lola Amaria. The event was graced by the presence of Lola herself, who shared her journey as a filmmaker and actress, alongside Ibu Sri Ningsih, one of the female exiles featured in the film. Ibu Sri recounted her poignant story of becoming stateless during the tumultuous power transition in Indonesia in 1965.

Eksil has garnered international acclaim, winning Best Documentary at the 2023 Indonesian Film Festival and Best Film at the 2022 Jogja NETPAC Asian Film Festival. It has also been screened in various countries, including Australia, Germany, the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Malaysia, and Thailand. The documentary explores themes of identity, history, and resilience, resonating deeply with audiences worldwide.

The screening at BIS drew an audience of approximately 45 students from universities and high schools across Bandung, Jakarta, and Surabaya. Following the film, an insightful discussion delved into the historical context and the personal stories presented in the documentary, leaving attendees with a profound understanding of identity and displacement.

The event was organized by the BIS Language and Literature Department, with generous sponsorship from Justus Steakhouse, Kalpataru Coffee, and Beautiess Official. This enriching experience exemplified the power of storytelling in shedding light on significant historical narratives and fostering meaningful conversations.
