SPH Kemang Village Team Win the Best High School Category in a Fiscal Policy Debate
Congratulations to SPH Kemang Village Team for winning the Best High School category in the International Fiscal Policy Debate Challenge for 2018! Abigail, Andrea and Cassia from Grade 11, participated in this challenging debate competition, co-sponsored by the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia and the Australian Government. This debate competition was held on December 9th – 10th, 2018, at the Ministry of Finance’s office, under the theme of “Bridging Policymakers with Debate: Indonesian Fiscal Policy Challenge”.
The competition consisted of 30 teams, including 10 high school teams and 20 university or open institution teams. In the pre-elimination rounds, all 30 teams competed together, which means our high school team had to hold their own against teams of experienced adult debaters. The SPHKV team was up to the challenge and made it into the elimination rounds, where they then competed against other high school teams.
Students underwent three rounds: the Pre-elimination Round, the Semifinal Round and the Grand Final. Each round had a different range of topics including the ASEAN economic community, the digital economy, and decentralization. Each of the debate rounds also had its own degree of difficulty, and our students had to master several weighty fiscal and economic issues. One of the main ideas that came from the competition was to highlight the need for Indonesia to prioritize environmental sustainability over economic growth.
It is important for the young generation to be more aware of national and global issues, thus allowing them to think critically about any possible solution towards a relevant problem. We hope that in the future there will be many young leaders who contribute to Indonesia’s better future.
