The annual International Youth Science & Innovation Fair competition (link) is the top and most prestigious science fair competition held in Indonesia alongside the National Young Inventors Award Competition (NYIA) and Youth Scientific Work Competition (LKIR). The international event is organized by the Indonesian Institute of the Sciences (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia) and this year corresponded with a special Indonesia Science Expo promoting the development of Indonesian scientists and research institutions.

Hundreds of the top high school science competitors form Indonesia and internationally competed in the event this year, showcasing their cutting edge scientific research in the fields of Life Sciences (67% of participants), Engineering and Applied Physics (30% of participants) and Social and Behavioral Sciences (3% of participants). Participants from Indonesia were selected from thousands of applicants according to the Head of LIPI, Laksana Tri Handoko who describes the event as a competition “providing the stepping stones in pursuing the world of scientific research.” This year the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, opened the event speaking on the importance of developing Indonesia’s young scientists as keys to developing new technologies, business opportunities and solutions to major national and international problems.

We are proud to have had a Grade 12 Sinarmas World Academy (SWA) biology student compete in the event presenting his research on the effects of antioxidants in mediating stress responses in rice seedlings. Placing in the top 25% of the Life Sciences category and earning recognition by judges, this project was a part of student’s Diploma Programme Extended Essay research and demonstrates the important role that research completed in high school plays in helping students develop portfolios for university applications.
